Annotation means adding notes to text. The process of annotating helps readers dig deeper into text, improving comprehension and analytical thinking. As readers gain insight, they become better equipt for writing--whether analytical or creative. This annotation curriculum will help students define, recognize, and mark: universal story structure and its elements; literary elements that create musical or poetic quality; literary elements that generate comparisons and imagery; and techniques that determine a writer's style. Children benefit from this guided approach to annotation by following this path to learning and appying this complex process.

Annotating Literary Elements provides literature for practice, but the strategies can be utilized again and again with other texts throughout the school year and for years to come! This curriculum augments any language arts program to promote close reading and analytical writing. For further study, consider The Annotation Bookmark.

Annotating Literary Elements can be reprinted for personal use with any story.
