Fishing for Meaning is a visual, interactive metaphor to help students practice interpreting text. Writers put words on a page expecting readers to look below the surface for deeper meaning. While stocking their ocean with their own interpretations and literary elements, students develop the close reading skills needed for future analysis. As students fish, they make connections with text and with the larger human experience. Engaging in this strategy allows students to discover and own of their role as active readers.
