What is annotation?

Annotation is a conversation with text through bits and pieces of writing. Annotating develops a deeper understanding of abstract ideas and encourages original thoughts. It is used to teach students of all ages to practice close reading and analytical writing. This difficult challenge requires focused attention, comprehension, and analysis—three hard-to-teach language skills.

How does it help?

Annotation BookMarks guides students through annotation. Successful annotation requires a great deal of underlying skill, necessitating time and practice. Therefore, students need multiple opportunities to practice annotation across all genres.

How do I use it?

Annotation BookMarks offers more guided practice as a follow up to Annotating Literary Elements. The guide will cue students on key literary devices, helping them annotate and interpret literature. BookMarks can be printed and folded, providing space for students to:

  • track literary techniques and structural elements

  • capture and record thoughts

  • pay close attention to the writer’s style and techniques

Annotation BookMarks can be used as a follow-up to the Annotating Literary Elements curriculum.
