Students must be explicitly taught how to analyze text. Learning to annotate is a direct path to analytical thinking!

What is annotation?

Annotation is a conversation with text through bits and pieces of writing. Annotating develops a deeper understanding of abstract ideas and encourages original thoughts. It is used to teach students of all ages to practice close reading and analytical writing. This difficult challenge requires focused attention, comprehension, and analysis—three hard-to-teach language skills.

What are literary elements?

Literary elements are writing techniques used to deeply engage the reader in the text. These elements are also used by authors to explore the artistry of language.

“I used Annotating Literary Elements last year with my 9th grader, and it is truly my favorite curriculum I’ve ever used in homeschooling. I recommend it to everyone who will listen!” ~ Ashley

How does it help?

Annotating Literary Elements teaches students how to identify figurative language and literary elements and apply that knowledge to generate analysis. This process teaches students how to dig deeply into text, improving comprehension and developing analytical thinking. Students will define, recognize, and mark:

  • Universal story structure

  • Rhythmic and poetic elements

  • Comparisons and imagery

  • Aspects of writer's style

How do I use it?

Annotating Literary Elements provides explicit instruction for the educator to guide students through defining, identifying, marking, and utilizing these elements (i.e. annotation). This document provides literature for practice, but the strategies can be utilized with any text throughout the school year and for years to come! As learners gain insight, they become better equipped for deep writing, both analytical and creative.

This document includes Annotation BookMarks, a student-utilized reference to guide learners as they annotate.

Annotating Literary Elements can be reprinted for use with any piece of literature.
